Can German Shepherds Eat Apples?

Apples are delicious fruits that are known for their high fiber and antioxidant content. Apples benefit men and animals because they are rich in vitamins and minerals essential for proper body functioning. But can German Shepherds eat apples? Read on to find out.

Can German Shepherds Eat Apples?

Yes, German Shepherds can eat apples without any side effects. Apples, especially the peels, are high in fiber content that helps to aid digestion and curb hunger and overeating and regulates blood sugar which makes it a very good snack for diabetic and also obese German shepherds that need to lose weight.

Apples are low in fat and calories, so you can be sure your beloved German shepherds won’t gain much weight from eating them. They even help to develop strong and healthy bones and tissues because they contain good amounts of Vitamins A and C, Potassium, Calcium, and antioxidants.

Are Apples Safe for German Shepherds?

Yes, apples are safe for most German Shepherds and other dog breeds.  Apples do not pose any risk or toxicity to German shepherds unless they are fed with seeds or the core that contains cyanide that can cause the dog to choke if consumed. In addition, German shepherds love apples because their crunchiness helps clean their teeth and gives them fresh breath, but this might take a bad turn as the apple peels can get stuck in the teeth and cause a lot of discomfort.

Feeding puppies with apples for the first time also requires some safety measures. Always give them very small amounts to prevent any digestive problems like diarrhea or vomiting and quickly detect allergies.

How Many Apples Can German Shepherds Eat?

German shepherds should be fed with just a few slices of apples. You should not feed your German shepherd with too many apples because it can lead to diarrhea or digestive distress.

German shepherds love eating apples because of the sweet taste and crunchiness, so whenever you feed them with apples, always ensure you do that in moderation and do not get carried away with feeding them in excess quantities.

Ideally, you should give your German shepherd apples as treats to reward them for good behavior or satisfy their sugar cravings, so one to two slices are enough per serving. Apples contain a lot of sugar: about 19 grams which makes a full apple too much for a dog.

Conclusion

Apples are nutritious and super beneficial fruits that can be fed to adult German shepherds and even puppies. In fact, they can be fed to all dog breeds. Also, they are a better and healthier way to satisfy your German shepherd’s sugar craving than other sources like chocolates and candies.

Although when German shepherds chew apples, they get to clean their teeth, this shouldn’t be considered dental care. Always ensure you carry out regular dental hygiene no matter how many apples you feed your German Shepherd.
